Leon Battista Alberti, Santa Maria Novella in Florence, and Nicolaus Cusanus

Alberti's front of Santa Maria Novella Church in Florence is one of the most important works of this architect. The study monitors links between the harmonic proportions of this work and the ideas of the aesthetics of Nicholas of Cusa. The points of contact between Nicholas's teachings and Alberti's work can be found in questions of the role of elementary geometric shapes, the symbolism of numbers, ideal proportions, and the concept of music as a universal harmonising principle.
