Jan Evangelista Purkyně was one of the first European scholars to study the physiology of sight and sense perception. The article treats the ways in which Purkyně's conclusions may have inspired modern art and art theory. From this perspective, it concentrates on František Kupka, Antonín Procházka, Bohumil Kubišta, Emila Filla and Vincenc Kramář.
