A new understanding of the subject and subjectivity characterises today's study of visual art. This change is reflected in the essay of Keith Moxey, one of the most significant representatives of poststructuralist thought in art history. The end of the Humanist notion of the subject opened the road to new approaches to historical interpretation (for example, gender studies), which play an undeniably important role today. Moxey considers a new theory of subjectivity and examines the complicated relationship between a historian's subjectivity and his or her text.

The article deals with the development of Krakow under the rule of the Přemyslicl dynasty, which lasted not quite 16 years. Under Wenceslas II, around 1300, the city was surrounded by a city wall and contained several newly built churches. The early Gothic fragments, documenting the til now unknown stage of the reconstruction of the cathedral at Wawel, which was most likely founded by the Krakow bishop Jan Muskata, deserve particular attention. Had this reconstruction been completed, the Wawel sanctuary would have become the first Polish cathedral with a classic cathedral choir, which could have been modelled on the Cistercian church in Sedlec.

The Madonna in the Franciscan Convent in Pilsen and the Question of Bohemian Art in the Time of Hus

Thanks to the recent restoration of the wooden Madonna in the chapel of the Franciscan convent in Pilsen, it was possible to carry out a detailed study of this monumental statue. The author of the article places the statue in the context of Central European art and along works of historicism from the 1540s and 1550s, supported in the Czech Lands by a new social class: the bourgeoisie. The article also focuses on questions of the practical workshop continuity of the time the existence of which is supported by the circumstances surrounding the origin of the Franciscan Madonna. Research has also shown that the sculpture is one of the oldest works employing the decorative so-called Presbrokat technique.

Assumption in the Burning Bush

The author focuses on the origin and analysis of the iconographic character of Assumption in the Burning Bush, which appears on several Czech late-Gothic panel paintings (the Assumption of Bílá hora, the Lanna Assumption, the Assumption of Deštná, the Dubany Alter, the Assumption of Sepekov and the Assumption of Saint Vitus). This motif probably comes from Archbishop Jan of Jenštejn's circle, which played a significant role in the creation of the Marian cult in the Czech Lands.

Scary Monsters of Science and Super Creeps of Art: Redon's Temptation of Saint Anthony

The story of the temptation of Saint Anthony belongs to the favourite themes in the history of visual art. In the last third of the 19th century, it became, through the influence of Gustave Flaubert, a key motif for modern artists such as F. Rops, F. Knopff and A. Kubin. It was in these years that Odilon Redon painted the temptation in three lithographic cycles, containing more than 40 pages. The significance of the cycles lies in the artist's ability to entwine artistic form with a philosophically coherent concept. In the work, Redon newly expresses the relation between scientific knowledge (of the natural sciences) and artistic creation.

'Swansongs' from 1945

The writing of 'Swansongs', which is devoted to methods of working with a text, was inspired by the author's experience working in the monitoring service in the Second World War. He was responsible for listening and recording foreign broadcast news, which were then linguistically revised. This work was carried out by groups of archivists and journalists, whose views on methods of handling text differed significantly. In 'Swansongs', Ernst Gombrich adopts the archivist's view, which he defended.
