The 'Pre-History'of Czech Art Modernism in Munich

The article treats Škréta, the association of art students founded in Munich in 1885, and its importance for the development of modernism in Czech art. It analyses the artistic attitudes formulated in that era, which found both negative and positive expression: the rejection of deep-rooted academic conventions and criticism of routine in art, as well as the assertion of invention, originality and spontaneity as criteria of artistic quality.
