Crossing Boundaries: Gottfried Lindauer, a Czech Artist in New Zealand and his Paintings of Maori

Gottfried Lindauer (1839-1926) is an almost forgotten Czech artist. He took a course in Vienna and then, in 1874, moved to New Zealand to become one of the most famous painters of the colonial age there. His portraits of the Maori in particular were highly regarded; they were placed in various contexts in which they assumed various meanings. The text also mentions Lindauer's contacts with the Czechs, for example with Václav Frič and Mr and Mrs Náprstek.
