Die Idee des Himmlischen Jerusalems und die Triforiumsgalerie im Prager Veitsdom

The article interprets the Triforium Gallery in Saint Vitus Cathedral as an integral part of the complex, symbolically metaphorical meaning of the architecture of the choir. The author draws on the universal concept of the cathedral as an incarnation of heavenly Jerusalem, which is realized in the Triforium Gallery. Images are placed along the peripheral walls, representing the imaginary city walls of the heavenly city. The essence of this formation lies in the communicative function and in the well-known medieval symbolism of passages/doorways as entrance into Paradise. The article mentions some predecessors of this concept, which we find primarily in Romanesque painting.
