Jiná moderna Leopolda Bauera

The subject of the article is the architectural work of Leopold Bauer (1872-1938) throughout approximately the last 15 years of his life, during which he designed a number of significant structures (the retail store Breda and Weinstein in Opava, the villa of Valerie Fischer in Brno, the Vogelweidhof apartment bloc in Vienna, the completion of the sanatorium at the Jeseník spa, a gymnasium for Krnov, the church of St Hedvika in Opava). The interpretation of Bauer's works is based on his own theoretical opinions and is introduced in the wider context of contemporary connections. The architect's historicism and eclecticism, his stress on form as bearer of meaning, leanings toward popular culture and his criticism of international style justify the author's placement of the artist among the predecessors of postmodernism.
