The Strahov Monastery was apparently founded in 1140 on the initiative of the Olomouc bishop Jindřich Zdík, the Czech prince Vladislav II and his wife Gertrude. The first part of this translation deals with the circumstances surrounding the monastery's founding, its first occupants and other events surrounding the monastery's early years. In the second half of the article, the authors concentrate on the original Romanesque basilica, the appearance of which they reconstruct on the basis of recent research.
