The Liberating Power of Exiled Laughter: Gender, Caricature, and the Antifascist Movement in the Pre-war Czechoslovakia. The Case of Simplicus

The study deals with a gender analysis of the Simplicus humorist weekly, published in Prague since 1934. Created by a group of exiled German artists, the weekly became a tool against Hitler's ideology, using humour and caricature. The author highlights above all the special interconnection of politics, sexuality, and eroticism, through which the magazine not only criticised the Third Reich, but also undermined many gender stereotypes.
