The bi-monthly journal Umění / Art has been published by the Institute for Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1953. It is a peer-reviewed journal. It evolved from a magazine of the same name, which had been produced by the publisher Jan Štenc since 1918 and is now the only periodical in the Czech Republic which aims at a systematic presentation of the most current research in Czech art history. Its content is predominantly concerned with art historical research which covers the early medieval period up to the twentieth century.
The journal endeavours to provide better access to scholars from abroad in evaluating medieval and modern Czech art and is, thereby, increasing the number of articles it publishes in other languages. Recently the journal has formed numerous links with researchers from abroad who are occupied with Czech and Central European topics. Researchers outside the Czech Republic are increasingly being invited to contribute to the journal and a large number of foreign university libraries subscribe to it. Umění / Art appears six times a year, containing about one hundred pages with eighty black and white photographs.
